Self Study options with The Wine Academy

Attending a wine course is one of the best ways of learning about wine. You will meet like minded individuals, have a chance to taste wines and ask questions of your tutor.

At The Wine Academy we are very proud of our record of achievement in Wine and Spirit Education Trust courses and do out utmost to deliver on our promise of ‘extraordinary wine courses’. Several of our students have gone on to win wine industry sponsored scholarships and further their career within the wine trade.

However we understand that not everyone can commit to attending a course on a weekly basis which is why we offer a self study option.

What is self study?

You will study at home in your own time. You will be provided with a study pack containing the course textbook, revision guide and course specification. Self study is available at Intermediate (level 2) and Advanced (level 3) levels.

When do I sit my exam?

Your self study fee includes your exam fee. You will be given a list of exam dates when you register as a student. You must call us three weeks before you wish to sit your exam so that you can be registered with the WSET as a candidate. Exams take place in York, Leeds and Harrogate.

How long does my registration last?

Your self study registration lasts for a year. You must sit your exam within this time. You will have at least 3 exam days when you may sit the Advanced exam and 5 opportunities to sit the Intermediate exam during the registration period.

What if I have any questions about the syllabus?

You will be assigned a tutor on registration. You may email or call them for guidance. Please be aware that it may take a couple of days to get back to you during busy periods.

How much studying will I have to do?

Everyone varies depending on their level of knowledge to begin with. However, as a guide we recommend a minimum of 25 hours of studying for the Intermediate course and 60 hours for the Advanced course.

Can I join any of the taught sessions?

Yes, if space permits. We specify that Advanced students must attend at least 1 taught session to practise their tasting skills. One half day session or 2 evening sessions are included in the Advanced self study fee. There is a fee of £40 per half day or £25 per evening to attend any additional taught sessions. You must call the office to book these sessions in advance.
